Just ran into this word today: CHAV
Do you know what that means? It is basically a label given to youngsters in the UK. They dress a certain way, they probably talk a certain way too. It’s quite amusing to hear all these kinds of labels given to our youngsters…especially the so called delinquent ones. Sometimes I don’t get it. We do not want them to act in a bad way, yet we label them negatively and expect them to change.
And labels usually have a different effect on these youngsters. More often than not, they bask in the glory of being called something and of belonging to a certain group. To them, this is an elite status. In my opinion, they just need to identify themselves, to belong somewhere.
Oh well…back to chav, the root word has its origins from Romani, meaning child.
So can we say that an acorn is a chav?
I don’t think so. An acorn is a nut.
You might think that this is such a random post on a Tuesday. Well, it is. Random.
